Strike A Pose! Embrace The Yogi In YOU!

In a world where Yoga is becoming today’s hottest mind/body trend, we decided to share some knowledge on CTV Morning Live for beginners who have yet to discover their inner Yogi! Watch the segment HERE!

What is YOGA?

Yoga is all about connecting body, mind, and spirit. Ancient Yogis believe that in order for man to be in harmony with himself and his environment, he must integrate the three of these through exercise, breathing, and meditation – the three main Yoga structures! Whether you’re an athlete, mom, dad, teenager, or senior, yoga can be modified to suit all levels of fitness. It has been proven to lower blood pressure while increasing strength and flexibility. Best of all Yoga helps to focus and relieve us from everyday stress!

What’s with all these different Yoga classes?

Ever find you bring up the topic of Yoga and you’re bombarded with all these names you can’t even pronounce? Like Iyengar, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Jivamukti, Anusara, and Kundalini? YOU’RE NOT ALONE, I’m in the same boat! On CTV Morning Live we touched on 4 of the most common styles of Yoga -that way you can start with the basics!

1 – Bikram – A set of 26 poses, and 2 breathing exercises. Get ready to discover sweat glands you never knew you had.

2 – Hatha – Great for beginners! Learn the basic poses and simple breathing exercises with this slow pace class to help you become comfortable on the mat.

3 – Power – Similar to Flow but the room is heated to 40 degrees. Fewer poses than flow, but they’re held longer. Strength building.

4 – Flow – More poses than Power and they’re moved through more quickly. Flexibility building.

And a huge thanks to Alex Mazerolle for joining me on CTV to demo poses from each style of Yoga! Alex not only teaches at YYOGA, but she started her own company Girlvana Yoga in 2012 which runs programs in high schools and community centers teaching teen girls empowerment and self-worth through yoga and meditation. Alex also just completed a project for EA Sports by creating them a Yoga app called Yogify! Talk about an empowering woman!

Tips for Yoga first timers:

-Dress comfy! Avoid heavy cottons and keep your clothing light and fitted (Here’s a personal favorite of mine – why? the moisture-wicking technology pulls sweat away from your skin).

-DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! Before, during, and especially after class to flush all the toxins out!

-Bring a water bottle, towel, and warm layers for after class – most studios offer mat/block rentals.

Where to start?

Studios are EVERYWHERE! If you’re just starting out, every Lululemon location offers complimentary yoga, AND a best of all a brand new app was released mid April called ‘the Om Finder’! Wherever you are in the world, it will help you find a class! Discover new teachers, classes, and studios, connect with the community, and schedule away!

Lastly, as much as Yoga is a quiet and focused activity, don’t take yourself too seriously! Be kind to yourself as you learn new poses and embrace your inner smile!
